Homo naledi: Extinct species of hominin discovere Homo naledi:
Extinct species of hominin discovered by a research team led by South African paleoanthropologist Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand. Found in 2013 in the Gauteng province of South Africa, in the almost inaccessible Dinaledi Chamber (ā€œchamber of starsā€) part of the chamber of the Rising Star Cave system in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Fossils are dated around 250,000 years ago. The research team thinks that H. naledi is not a direct ancestor of modern humans, but probably an offshoot within the genus Homo. The skeletal anatomy presents ancestral features known from australopithecines with more recent features associated with later hominins. Fossils of at least 15 individuals, amounting to more than 1550 specimens, had been excavated from the cave. Anthropologists provided evidence that the brain of H. naledi was small, but nonetheless complex, sharing structural similarities with the modern human brain. Some indications that the hominin bodies may have been deliberately placed in the cave near the time of their death.

Hyperrealist reconstruction created directly over the cast of the skull and bone remains (hand, foot, …)
Sculpture soon to be exhibited at the Perot Museum, Dallas, Texas. @PerotMuseum, #PerotMuseum

Neandertal Feldhofer Reconstruction of Feldhofer Neandertal Feldhofer

Reconstruction of Feldhofer skull: a combination of the Calotte and the fitting of two cranial fragments from excavations in Kleine Feldhofer Grotte.

This combination is supported by data from another, comparable Neandertal (La Ferrassie 1) and chin-fragment from the new excavations.
Kleine Feldhofer Grotte is a karstic limestone cave and a paleoanthropologic site in the Neander Valley in western Germany. In August 1856, the Neanderthal type specimen was unearthed from the cave. Miners uncovered a skull cap and a number of skeletal bones to be labeled Neanderthal. The bones belong to at least three distinct individuals.

SELAM

KABWE - homo rhodesiensis - 300 000 Sculpture @el KABWE - homo rhodesiensis
- 300 000
Sculpture @elisabeth_daynes based on the Kabwe skull
šŸ“ø by S .Entressangle

Searching for metal ore deposits in the limestone caves of Kabwe, Zambia, Swiss miner Tom Zwiglaar Ā is credited with finding the first early human fossil ever to be discovered in Africa in 1921.
When Kabwe (also known as Broken Hill) was sent to Arthur Smith Woodward, Woodward assigned the specimen to a new species: Homo rhodesiensis. Today, most scientists assign KabweĀ to Homo heidelbergensis.
Kabwe shows features similar to H. erectus such as a low braincase profile (the area towards the back of the skull),Ā large brow ridges, a slight widening of the midface known as the sagittal keel, and a protrusion at the back of the skull named the occipital torus. But Kabwe also resembles modern humans with a flatter, less prognathic face, and larger brain (1300 cubic centimeters).
This skull is one of the oldest known to have tooth cavities. They occur in 10 of the upper teeth.Ā  The individual may have died from an infection related to dental disease or from a chronic ear infection.
